From Auckland City, you can take a ferry to this island. Waiheke has amazing beaches and some great vineyards. It’s known for its arty alternative population. A lot of people go to Waiheke to see art exhibitions, wineries, and beaches. They have some easy to moderate walks and there’s a great view everywhere you look. If you’re a beach buff, wine connoisseur, or art enthusiast, Waiheke is a must visit.
Martinborough, South Wairapa
Known for its wine and food, this town has grown into one of New Zealand’s best. The local vineyards, cafes, and restaurants make this a foodie’s paradise. Crafts, wine, and food are displayed at fairs. Cape Palliser is a great place to fish. The hills around Martinborough are full of olive groves, sheep, and beef farms. The boutique shops in Martinborough are worth a visit.
Nelson, Tasman Bay
At the top of the South Island, Nelson is one of the most picturesque places in the world. It’s known for its arts and crafts. World of Wearable Arts was founded in Nelson, and there’s a museum with past winners. There are also vineyards and cafes in Nelson, plus fishing and sightseeing.
Otago, Wanaka
It’s on the edge of Lake Wanaka, surrounded by the Southern Alps. The great setting makes Wanaka’s outdoor sports even more enjoyable. It’s on the route to Milford Sound, not too far from Queenstown. Additionally, Wanaka hosts the bicentennial Warbirds over Wanaka airshow, which draws planes from all over.
