Australia's Christmas
We’re almost in September, so it’s time to start thinking about Christmas. If you were super organized, you’d have booked it right after last Christmas. How’s Christmas in Australia? It’s totally different from a northern hemisphere Christmas. There’s something very magical about sitting in front of a log fire, drinking mulled wine, and watching the fairy lights sparkle in the background while watching a very cold Christmas. Probably a lot of cold Christmases have passed you by, so let’s do something different. Australia is in the middle of their summer, so it’s a great time to visit. Most days will be in the high twenties.
Australia used to be ruled by Britain, so English traditions are still strong. Some homes still serve turkey with all the trimmings on Christmas day. It’s hot in the kitchen, so most people cook on the BBQ. Seafood is a big part of the menu, and Pavlova is often served for dessert. No matter what’s served, it’s about bringing the family together and enjoying great food and drinks. Is it starting to make sense? Are you picturing yourself on a beach drinking champagne in the sun? Maybe you’ll be overlooking a gorgeous vista in one of Australia’s National Parks. How about an island getaway - maybe the Whitsundays?
Before you pack your bags for Christmas in Australia, here are some things you should know. Visit Australia at this time of year and it’ll probably be the most expensive. It’s summer and the Australian Summer School holiday. Most families take their annual vacation from mid-December to the end of January. If you’ve always wanted to see the amazing Sydney Fireworks on New Years Eve, don’t be put off by this. There’s nothing like them and it’s worth the trip.
There are ways to find cheaper accommodation during this time, since many Australians leave their homes vacant. Experiencing Christmas in Australia really is worth looking into home exchanges or short term holiday lets. However, if you want to do it right, I’d book at least 9 months in advance. So you’ll get the best accommodation and there will be plenty of room. Many Australians book before March for the following year for the really good places.
